We have a method for sound healing that has proven to be novel. It is trance-inducing and relaxing. Through a carefully developed sequence of play, we take the participants on a journey. I will walk you through our sequence.
The sounds begin with a gentle rhythmic repetition. We begin with the monolina (a lovely-sounding harp). About 10 minutes in, the gong is introduced with softness and steadily increases into deeper tones. The monolina drops off, and the gong runs for about 15 min – this experience can be cosmic as the gong resonates with an otherworldly metallic shimmering sound that further induces trance.
At this time, the participants rarely entertain mind-chatter. It’s nearly impossible. Instead, they enter into a quiet-mind state. For some people, this is a novel experience. They describe an exquisite stillness that is spacious and expansive. Sometimes, they fall asleep and let go, allowing the body to rest in a deep samadhi state.
Continuing with methodology, from the gong soundscape we slowly integrate into crystal singing bowls for another 10 or 15 minutes. Then, we witness a transition from bowls to the mother drum. She is played slow and steady in single beats. Then, more rapid beats and into the soaring and faster rhythm of ‘eagle beat’, which borderlines on theta range of 240 beats per minute.
Again, we are in the realm of trance-inducing rhythms. The transitions are smooth and deliberate. The mother drum brings participants back down to earth and the drum sings her primal notes for approximately three percussion events. This segment usually has a pause and a deep dive into stillness. In this moment, everyone is still, and we allow for the integration of action and stillness offering a rare glimpse of no mind. This can be held for 10 minutes in silence. During these songs another facilitator will introduce other shamanic tools like dried bamboo grass (shaking) and the ocean drum invoking the sea and waves, and maybe some gentle Tibetan bowl strikes.
After the long pause, we introduce a heartbeat rhythm for about five to ten minutes. In this closing section, we bring in the koshi chimes, and crystal singing pyramids, and use aroma therapeutic scents like neroli or rose.
When the session is complete, we wait for some minutes and gently bring everyone’s attention back to their body and the present moment. This journey lasts about 1.5 hrs.
Many participants have reported profound experiences from these sessions, including witnessing native ancestors, goddesses, guides, divine presences offering blessings and healings, power animals, nature spirits, and deep peace. Others experience deep sleep, and yet others catch colors and light coming in along with a deep release. The overall reaction is one of astonishment at the distinctiveness and novelty of the sound bath experience.
As a facilitator playing drum, I always enter a deep trance and connect with spirit, and stay open to spontaneous expression. This allows for a unique experience every time. One tip for other drum facilitators: understand the eagle beat is fast and designed for trance induction. Know that this beat can be at the foundation of your songs and other variations can expand from this powerful beat. Mix up the power levels of your playing and in the moments of softness there is a relief and letting go by participants at subconscious levels. The same holds for the faster power beats when reaching the highest peaks. Make it strong and memorable, touching the power of thunder beats.
